Felicity Gibson is a young war hero given command of a science ship earlier than her peers could ever hope. It was supposed to be an honour but for a fighting woman it is nought but an insult. Her crew is fractious and inexperienced and she finds herself at odds with her second-in-command but they have a mission.

The Commonwealth ship William Dampier, a scientific research vessel and sister to Gibson's command, has gone missing while exploring a mysterious new planet. Gibson and her crew are sent to investigate - but what they will find is stranger than anyone could have imagined.
