In Varnmark tensions are high. A royal marriage and the churn of modern industry brings things closer to disaster and the whole while people just try to survive. Valentina Mikhaelova, a young naval lieutenant, is just amongst many but life has a little more in store for her. Isolated and near friendless, she may discover the world is more complex than she wants it to be.

This is a story of war. It’s a love story as well, and also a story of learning and discovery and change. But war, fighting and conflict are central aspects of the plot and as such there are graphic representations of physical and psychological injury as well as discrimination, homophobia and similar.
